A 20x zoom lense may not put the world on fire in the land of 24x and 26x lenses, the 20x is more than enough to cover such a focal point range as th e SX10 IS-560mm. Compared to the SX 5, the SX 10 offers a larger range of lenses and the megapixels jump from 8 to 10. Enhancements also include Face Detection Self-Timer, Servo AF and Intelligent Contrast Correction.
A Canon Powershot SX 10is review indicates it is an easy going hold and shoot type camera with a design similar to the SX 5. Some features include the battery powered operation provided buy four AA batteries and the concise LCD. The enlarged gripping area allows for plenty of manipulating room with the camera.
The standard automatic, semiautomatic and manual settings are in a more traditional layout. The power switch is a nice plain button. It’s a nice transition from there to review mode located on the back near the indented thumb rest along with the focus area and the exposure compensation selection buttons. The only drawback is the labelling which is hard to see when the light is dim or is seemingly invisible from the glare when the light is bright.
The control layout is a four way concentric dial navigation device. The dial does not always seem to respond correctly and over control is a problem until you can develop a feel for the dial that is located on the back right side. The zoom switch function seems to be the same way also. Keep this in mind if you want to buy Canon digital cameras in general.
The LCD that can twist and flip is small at 2.5 inches as many cameras in this style have a 3 inch screen. The electronic view finder appears grainy and is slow to update. Four different display setting have to be cycled through before there is access to the LCD and EVF instead of a dedicated toggle. Jumping back and forth between the two is extremely difficult.
A dedicated movie record but is a welcome change as it the mode dial that rotate 360 degrees instead of having to reverse direction to select other modes.
Another camera with a bit more in the pixel department is the Canon Powershot sd780is12.1 mp digital camera. This is a good option for a bit more clarity. However, for a good all around camera, buy Canon Powershot SX10is.
