| | The world of wifi has allowed the further expansion of the Internet revolution. Without the need for wires to connect everything from phones to computers, wifi enables communication beyond wired boundaries.
Wifi has come a long way in a lttle bit of time. The term wifi was used commercially in August, 1999 and was essentially a play on the words Hi-Fi “wifi” was determined to be a little catchier than Hi-Fi. There was an attempt to have the term stand for “Wireless Fidelity” but now the term really stands for nothing in particular but is now used in reference to wireless devices of all kinds.
A device that is wifi enabled such as iPod Touch, Apple iPhone Touch, mobile wifi router or a portable car GPS system, can make a connection to the Internet when the device is in range of a wireless network. When several access points are interconnected in one area, it is called a hotspot. This hotspot can cover a single room or engulf many square miles that include many overlapping hotspots. There are many wifi hotspots and many wifi locations. There are at least 300 projects that include a variety of metropolitan areas in progress. These are areas beyond the typical wifi radar at hotels, restaurants and airports.
If you are in the market to buy wifi or buy a wifi router, there are many options to choose from. The first thing to do is to decide exactly what type of access is needed. Sometimes, the thing to do may be to simply buy a wifi card or buy wifi max- a type of booster. Other solutions may be a bit more detailed and may cost more.
There are a number of wifi devices available such as a USB wifi antenna extender and a wifi long distance antenna. Both devices act like a long range wifi antenna booster and extend the wifi hotspot to the device. These devices vary in price and quality.
But there are free wifi locations available if you know where to look. Many businesses have free wifi hotpots like McDonald’s and some truck stops. This cuts down on the need for wifi hacking.
This long range wifi option is normally unregulated and is an alternative to satellite links or a cellular tower. Of course, many times you get what you pay for and the free wifi connection may be very weak.
